The final collaboration between Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. Featuring a trove of cherished songs, including “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and the title number, The Sound of Music won the hearts of audiences worldwide, earning five Tony Awards and five Oscars. The inspirational true story, based on the memoir of Maria Augusta Trapp, follows an ebullient postulate who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a moral decision.
Musical theatre legends Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II teamed up for their first collaboration 80 years ago in July 1942. Together Rodgers and Hammerstein redefined musical theatre forever starting with their first work Green Grow the Lilacs which later developed into Oklahoma! RTOP is honoring these iconic figures for their 80th Anniversary by featuring two of their most famous works The Sound of Music and South Pacific as bookends to RTOP’s 2022-23 Mainstage Musical season. As the dynamic duos final collaboration, The Sound of Music features the last song both Rodgers and Hammerstein created together, “Edelweiss.”
RTOP’s production of The Sound of Music is directed by Michael Todd and will blend national guest artists from New York and California onstage with local area talent. Andy Pope serves as music director. John Rich is the costume and scenic designer with choreography and musical staging by Michael Todd.
