Internationally presented dance artists Michael Schumacher and Corrie Befort and sound artist Jason E Anderson join for three evenings of live dance and analog modular synthesizer sound. Committed and experienced improvisers, the three will be scoring each performance as a discrete, unique event.
Following each performance, one of the three artists will offer a brief lecture and guide a Q+A with the audience to further unveil and articulate the history, tools and strategies at play within scored improvisational art. A different performer will lead the lecture at each event, offering a perspective reflecting their distinctive background and approach: for January Michael Schumacher, in February Corrie Befort, in March Jason E Anderson.
What is a “score” in this context? A score is a series of instructions or agreements conceived by the performers that guide and shape their real-time interactions. This framework is reliant on the skill and agile responsiveness of the improvisers. The resulting “instant composition” unfolds simultaneously for everyone present. Unexpected and often thrilling moments emerge as actions and sounds coalesce and collide in a space and time belonging equally to the audience and the performers.
The performers:
Michael Schumacher is a dancer and choreographer who has worked across Europe and Asia with companies and artists including Ballet Frankfurt, Twyla Tharp Dance, Feld Ballet, Jiří Kylián and William Forsythe. He currently divides his time between his hometown of Clarkston and The Netherlands, conducting improvisation workshops worldwide.
Corrie Befort is a dancer, choreographer, designer and filmmaker performing and presenting across the PNW and in Japan, NYC and Europe. Since moving to the Palouse she has created inclusive movement programs Dance for Parkinson’s+ and Animal Dances, taught improvisation at UI and is The Chelseas bassist.
Jason E Anderson is an electronic sound artist most recently presenting “Music for Observations” at the WSU Observatory. Producing and performing for many years in the PNW and running labels DRAFT and Gift Tapes, he currently builds his own synthesizers outside Pullman. Befort and Anderson also run hybrid performance company LIMITS together.
