Moscow Contemporary’s After School Art Program: Animal Dances Begins!

Not-so-secretly, Animal Dances classes are founded in human kinesiology and animal/human comparative anatomy.  We’re learning about animal and human structures, alignment, biomechanics and behavior. Every class combines sensory play, dance technique and animal learning. We handle bones, skins and taxidermy, oversized kinetic models (like our giant ribcage!), and move with objects that accentuate sensation. These include costume-like wearables designed to amplify and isolate specific functions – like weighted tails and trunks for understanding segments of the spine, or to mimic animal senses – like faceted viewers for “butterfly vision.” This tactile work dovetails into our dance technique work, improvisations, movement invention and choreography. We also play games relying on full-body listening and group problem-solving (pods, packs and flocking!). Great skills for all humans!
