Number two-ranked Dustin Poirier faces number three-ranked Justin Gaethje in a rematch from their fight back in April 2018.
That night Poirier came out on top, stopping Gaethje with strikes in the fourth round, and that was part of a career-best run for ‘Diamond’ that propelled him into title contention and score two huge wins over former two-weight champion Conor McGregor.
He twice challenged for the title during this run, only to come up short against Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira, but that has not deterred him in his quest to wear UFC gold.
Standing in his way at UFC 291 is Gaethje, a man who is seeking revenge as well as another shot at becoming champion.
Like Poirier, he too has fought for the lightweight title on two occasions, and like his opponent, he too saw his championship dreams go up in smoke at the hands of Nurmagomedov and then Oliveira.
