There have been many rumors as to whether the Latah County Jail will be closing. As this matter ahs not been discussed publicly, no decision has been made.
The Latah County Jail was built in 1973 according to the standards of the day, which is nowhere close to current jail standards. Late this summer, we were notified by the Moscow Fire Department of several issues regarding fire egress and fire suppression systems in the Latah County Jail. While some of these systems can be remedied at great taxpayer expense, there are several that cannot be repaired and therefore could create a severe liability for Latah County as a whole. This topic will be discussed publicly at the next Board of County Commissioners meeting on October 8, 2024.
