Silent Film Festival: Sunrise

September 4 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

$20
Silent Film Festival: Sunrise

F.W. Murnau’s last silent film reveals the full mesmerizing power of early narrative cinema before the transition to sound. Rated #10 in best films of all time according to Sight and Sound, 2022, Murnau’s gorgeous allegory of love, betrayal, and redemption holds enormous power for modern audiences. No other filmmaker makes formal experimentation feel so easy, sumptuous, and enjoyable in service to a universal story about a love that one couple must retell themselves–while undertaking a whirlwind trip to the city–if they’re to find reconciliation back at home. This screening is presented in partnership with the Washington-Idaho Symphony. Composer Isabella Morrill premieres a new score to be performed live with a full orchestra, conducted by Dr. Danh Pham.

The Second Annual Kenworthy Silent Film Festival enjoys support from Idaho Arts (ICA), Idaho Humanities Council, and UI Habib Institute for Asian Studies, and The Japan Foundation.
