2026 (Moscow, Idaho) — As Independence Day approaches, the Moscow Fire Department urges residents to use fireworks responsibly and be mindful of the impacts fireworks can have on public safety, veterans, first responders, individuals with PTSD, and pets.

Each year, fireworks cause injuries, structure fires, and wildland fires. Even legal consumer fireworks can reach temperatures high enough to cause severe burns and ignite dry vegetation and other combustible materials. With a mild winter, below-normal precipitation, and increasingly dry vegetation, wildland fire concerns have increased across the region. The Moscow Fire Department anticipates an elevated risk of grass, brush, and wildland fires throughout the summer months.

In Idaho, only Non-Aerial Common Fireworks (“Safe and Sane” fireworks) are legal for sale and use from June 23 through July 5. These include items such as fountains, sparklers, ground spinners, smoke devices, and snakes. Aerial fireworks remain illegal.

To help keep our community safe:

  • Follow all state and local fireworks laws.
  • Use fireworks only in open areas away from homes, vehicles, and dry vegetation.
  • Keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Never allow children to use fireworks without close adult supervision.
  • Never relight malfunctioning fireworks.
  • Soak used fireworks in water before disposal.
  • Never use fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Consider limiting fireworks to reasonable hours and notifying neighbors in advance.
  • Keep pets indoors and ensure identification information is current.

Residents are encouraged to attend professional fireworks displays whenever possible, as they provide a safer alternative and reduce the risk of injuries and fires.

If a fire or emergency occurs, call 911 immediately.
